Safe to do yourself
- Listen: new grinding or rattling means something is wearing
- Look: check rollers for chips and wobble, hinges for cracks, tracks for debris
- Test the auto-reverse: place a solid object in the door's path and confirm it reverses on contact
- Wipe the photo-eye sensor lenses and confirm both lights are steady
- Clear the tracks of dirt — but do not grease the inside of the track
The balance test
With the door fully closed, pull the emergency release and lift the door by hand. A balanced door lifts with modest effort and holds at waist height. If it slams down or flies up, the spring tension is wrong and needs a technician.
What a professional tune-up adds
A 25-point inspection covers spring tension, cable condition, drum and bearing wear, track alignment, fastener torque, opener force and travel limits, and the full safety system — with a written condition report so you know what is coming.
